Developing Management Skills in Internal Audit (1.5 days)

The Core Management Skills for Auditors course provides a variety of tools and techniques aimed at supporting audit managers in becoming more effective.

 

Who should attend?

 This course is aimed at auditors that are new to line management, or those that will assume a management role during the next 12-18 months.

 

What will I learn?

Upon completion you will be able to:

  • Apply a series of management techniques, improving the effectiveness of you and your team, including effective delegation

  • Address individual underperformance in a robust, structured and non-emotive manner

  • Managing meetings productively

  • Stakeholder management fundamentals

 

Course Programme includes

 Audit Management

  • Understand your own management style and how to use this successfully

  • Learn how to set goals and agree expectations with your team members that improves your chances of ‘buy in’ and individual engagement

  • Utilise a series of tools and techniques to manage your time effectively and ensure that task progress is monitored and achieved

  • Why it can be hard to delegate and how to do this successfully

 

Dealing with Underperformance

  • Understand how to deal with underperformance within your audit team

  • Learn how to give feedback to your team members and enhance performance

 

Meetings

  • Learn how to ensure that your audit meetings are effective and delivered on time

  • Understand how to improve your meetings using the hamburger model of Task/Process and Climate

  • Manage meeting actions and the presentation of papers and key messages effectively

 

Stakeholder management fundamentals

  • Understanding who are your key customers

  • Being insightful around what they want and don’t want

  • Negotiating basics – Influencing without authority and the Like-Intend-Must model

  • Resolving tensions between their needs and what is realistic

 

James C Paterson is a former Head of Internal Audit. He is on the IIA UK panel for EQA, helping to set up their EQA assessment frameworks.  He has extensive experience of doing EQAs, and also helps organisations prepare for an EQA. He delivers this course across Europe, including other courses on how to qualify to be an EQA assessor. He is the author of the book “Lean auditing”
